Hydrogen Hub
Noord-Holland

Noord-Holland is ready to accelerate the European transition towards green energy by playing a strategic role in the new hydrogen economy.

The region has a lot of offshore wind capacity at the North Sea, a strong industrial cluster in the North Sea Canal Area (NSCA), high-quality energy ports around Amsterdam and Den Helder, and the international aviation hub at Schiphol. The NSCA is located on the North Sea coast and therefore close to the large wind farms that are built in the North Sea. A substantial part of the Dutch goal to realize 70 GW of electricity by 2050 wil be transmitted onshore in the IJmond region. This energy can be used directly to help meet industry’s demand for electricity, or it can be converted into hydrogen close to where it is being generated. This makes Noord-Holland well equipped to develop a hydrogen economy.

Noord-Holland is a rapidly emerging Hydrogen Valley where a lot is already happening! Our region is investing significantly in a rich and diverse range of projects involving hydrogen production, distribution and application, covering the large-scale production of hydrogen in Den Helder and in the North Sea Canal Area, while applications range from large-scale deployment for industry (including Tata Steel), imports of hydrogen (Port of Amsterdam), grid balancing, as well as innovative applications in shipping, aviation, heavy duty transportation and agriculture.

Besides Noord-Holland achieving its own climate objectives, we can also make a substantial contribution to making the energy system throughout the Netherlands and northwest Europe more sustainable. In other words: the challenges for a sustainable future of our region are big, the players are big, but the opportunities, ambitions and possibilities are perhaps even bigger.

Since mid-January, passenger cars, but also vans and trucks have been able to refuel with hydrogen in Alkmaar, a crucial step forward in the transition to sustainable transport. In a video we show how this works and why the hydrogen transition is so important. This initiative is just one of the many innovative hydrogen projects taking place in North Holland North. In recognition of these ongoing efforts, the North Sea Canal Area and North Holland North have received Hydrogen Valley status from the European Union. NXT Mobility offers green hydrogen, produced from green gas. The aim is to soon obtain…

After an extensive pilot phase, NXT Mobility officially opened its Energy Hub hydrogen refuelling facility at De Boekelermeer business park on Friday 19 January. Full range of renewable energy supplies The opening of the hydrogen refuelling station is a first in the Alkmaar region and marks an important milestone for NXT Mobility (part of the GP Groot group). The fuel station supplies hydrogen for both lorries and buses (350 bar) and passenger cars (700 bar). The station also offers a variety of other sustainable energy products, such as sustainable diesel and LNG, and is expected to provide ultra-fast electric charging…

In its capacity of sole shareholder in the private limited company EBN, the Dutch government is joining PosHYdon as a partner. This pilot project focuses on green hydrogen production at a working offshore gas platform. Testing at InVesta EBN already has a 40% partnership in the Q13a-A platform, where the pilot is set to take place. PosHYdon is now moving towards the final phase. The setup will first be tested onshore at InVesta in May 2024. The first production of hydrogen on the Neptune Energy-operated platform is planned for the second half of 2024. EBN is participating in the PosHYdon…
